Good
advice from Dennis Chambers (current Santana drummer) on his take on the
best way to go as far as labels are these days.
Dennis
was also a former touring member with Steely Dan and Chick Corea
and he presently resides in Baltimore Maryland.
I
spoke with Dennis last week in a session for an upcoming CD with Victor
Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Greg Howe who has toured
with Enrique, NSYNC and was offered the guitar spot on the Justin
Timberlake and Christina Aguilera tour. Greg Howe had turned down many offers in
the past and is following his heart and getting back to doing his own
thing for Mike Varney’s Shrapnel Records label out of LA working with
Victor and Dennis instead of the tour he was just offered. I asked Dennis on the industry today and his take on it. “The best thing to do these days is go independent and stay away from the major labels right now. The major labels are crafting artists to fit what they want and have very little interest in the artist beyond the number of records they sell right now. They don’t have a clue what songs you play; they only want to see the numbers. If you get signed to a major label deal and you don’t sell you are dead in the water! You will get dropped and spend the next year paying the label off and no one will touch you! If you go the independent route you won’t get as much money up front but there will not be so much pressure. If you sell a fraction of what the big boys want you can still maintain a working relationship with the label and as you sell more CD’s then the major labels will stand up and take notice. Then you will have more say as to what you are doing and have a better chance at surviving and thriving in the industry. That is the best advice I can give an up and coming artist because the major labels have tunnel vision right now.’’
